Advancing Health Equity Through Standards:
People-Centred Care

Friday October 13, 2023

The health care landscape is continually evolving to meet the diverse needs of individuals worldwide. On October 13, Health Standards Organization (HSO) hosted a virtual event focused on advancing health equity through people-centred care approaches. The event garnered global interest with 1,889 registrations, and over 850 active participants including health care leaders, patients, providers, practitioners, and policymakers.

Health equity, as defined by the World Health Organization, refers to the absence of unfair and avoidable or remediable differences in health among population groups, whether those groups are defined socially, economically, demographically, geographically, or by other means. Achieving health equity requires a focus on people-centred care, which acknowledges individuals, families, and communities as active participants in their health journeys.

A pivotal takeaway from the event was the resounding support for people-centred care and equity principles. According to the feedback received, 90% of the attendees strongly agreed that adopting a people-centred care approach is essential for ensuring patient safety. Additionally, 87% of attendees found that the webinar's insights and discussions aligned with their organizations' 2024 priorities. These findings suggest that health systems and organizations worldwide are increasingly prioritizing people-centred care as a cornerstone of their strategic agendas.

Integrated people-centred care delivery is essential for improving health equity, as it enables everyone access to high-quality health services that meet their unique needs and preferences. Read the full article.
