Health Standards Organization (HSO) hosted a webinar introducing The Winds of Change, an Indigenous-led journey to create the National Standard of Canada for Cultural Safety and Humility.

On Thursday, November 21, 2024, Dr. Margo Greenwood, Vice President of Indigenous Health for the Northern Health Authority in BC, Monica McAlduff, Acting Vice President of quality, Cultural Safety and Humility and the Office of the Chief Nursing Office, Marilee Nowgesic Executive Director of the Canadian Indigenous Nurses Association and moderator Vishal Jain, Director of Cultural Safety and Humility at HSO had a thoughtful, engaging discussion on the development of the standard to address the wide-spread calls to advance cultural safety and humility, addressing Indigenous-specific racism and ways to harmonize the design and delivery of care with the rights of Indigenous Peoples.

Webinar Speakers:

Dr. Margo Greenwood is the co-chair for the Cultural Safety and Humility Technical Committee to develop the new Indigenous-led National Standard of Canada for Cultural Safety and Humility (CAN/HSO 75001:2026).

Dr. Margo Greenwood is a mother to three grown sons and a grandmother to one beautiful granddaughter. She is an internationally recognized Indigenous scholar of Cree ancestry. Throughout her career, she has promoted the health and well-being of children and families in Canada. Her academic and professional credentials include leadership of the National Collaborating Centre for Indigenous Health, Vice President of Indigenous Health for the Northern Health Authority in BC, and Interim Scientific Director of the Canadian Institute for Health Research’s Institute of Indigenous Peoples’ Health, alongside her professorship in UNBC’s Education Program.

In acknowledgment of her transformational leadership, especially in Indigenous health and early childhood, Dr. Greenwood has received numerous awards and recognitions. Most recently, she was appointed as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and an Officer in the Order of Canada.

 
 

Monica McAlduff is from the Secwepemc Nation and serves as the Acting Vice President, Quality, Cultural Safety and Humility and the Office of the Chief Nursing Office (OCNO). As part of the OCNO, the portfolio includes, Clinical Quality, Collaborative Practice, Clinical Education and System Redesign including Community Based Testing. Monica proudly joined the FNHA in January 2020 as the Executive Director within the OCNO bringing with her over 30 years in health care, first as a Registered Psychiatric Nurse in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland and progressing to several leadership roles within the health care system.

 

Marilee Nowgesic has been the executive director of the Canadian Indigenous Nurses Association since January 2018 and has more than 25 years of experience working on Indigenous issues. Originally from Thunder Bay, she is a member in good standing with the Fort William First Nation and is an Eagle clan member.

HSO is convening a national Indigenous-led Technical Committee as part of the Winds of Change initiative.  The Technical Committee is open for applications until November 22, 2024. HSO is seeking applicants with lived experience and a longstanding commitment to the principles of Truth, Rights, and Reconciliation to apply here today.
